BASICS

BASICS: "Hummingbirds.....where is the person, I ask, who, on observing this glittering fragment of the rainbow, would not pause, admire, and turn his mind with reverence..." (J. J. Audubon).
This is a blog about my summer life at the Baiting Hollow Hummingbird Sanctuary, at my winter garden, Calypso, in the Bahamas, and aspects of life in general.
This private sanctuary is now permanently closed to the general public, as a result of a lawsuit brought by a neighbor. Only my friends and personal guests may visit (paul.adams%stonybrook.edu).

  1. Paul, do you think it's too early to have a feeder out? Lanny Chambers' 2012 migration map is showing hummers all around us, but none reported on LI as of yet.

It's been so warm that I expect to see hummers any minute -- I'm putting a feeder out just in case.

  3. I've got a feeder out too, in Huntington, on the notion that they might show up earlier than normal due to global warming trends. Nothing yet, but I've been watching closely and, like you, I am expecting to see one any minute. P.S. found a cool mail order nursery in Washington State - Sweet Nectar Nursery - all plants geared towards hummers and/or butterflies.

  5. Iceman, I kept the feeder going throughout late March until they arrived -- as usual -- in late April. It's interesting how, year after year, the hummers arrive all around us, even as far north as Canada, but they never seem to hit eastern Long Island until late April. Smart little guys, too, because it gets darned cold at night out here in the early spring!

We have an Agway in Riverhead close to Paul's sanctuary that stocks many plants specifically for the hummer enthusiasts in the area. And the sanctuary is an awesome place to go for hummer garden inspiration. I will check out Sweet Nectar, though, and thanks for the tip!
