BASICS

BASICS: "Hummingbirds.....where is the person, I ask, who, on observing this glittering fragment of the rainbow, would not pause, admire, and turn his mind with reverence..." (J. J. Audubon).
This is a blog about my summer life at the Baiting Hollow Hummingbird Sanctuary, at my winter garden, Calypso, in the Bahamas, and aspects of life in general.
This private sanctuary is now permanently closed to the general public, as a result of a lawsuit brought by a neighbor. Only my friends and personal guests may visit (paul.adams%stonybrook.edu).

East Hampton Noise Meeting Reminder; Epiphytes

The important helicopter/seaplane noise meeting in East Hampton will be held today at 4.30:

The meeting—originally set for last thursday at LTV Studios at 75 Industrial Road in Wainscott—will now take place at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at the same location.

Here's a vid of a colorful bromeliad in a poinciana tree at Calypso. I'll try to show one in bloom (hummers love the flowers) soon. To the left you see a foxtail palm and to the right a Bismarckia palm.

The East Hampton Aircraft Noise meeting has been delayed by a week (to march 12) because of ........snow!
Here's a recent video of the beach in front of Northside Restaurant (Rock Sound, Eleuthera), where we had a delicious lunch.

Important Helicopter Noise Meeting Tomorrow; smell the roses

(from Kathleen Cunningham, Chair of the Quiet Skies Coation. If you are ever bothered by aircraft noise over Long Island, please try to attend this very important meeting.)

Dear Quiet Skies Coalition Supporters,

This is IT. This is the BIG SHOW. We simply MUST SHOW UP IN FORCE to support the East Hampton Town Board's proposals for access limits to protect the public from noise.

Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 4:30 p.m. at
LTV Studio,
75 Industrial Rd,
Wainscott, NY 11975

Driving directions
Montauk Hwy to Wainscott NW Road (Twice Upon a Bagel is at the corner) in Wainscott.
Make a left (if traveling East on Montauk Hwy) onto Wainscott NW Road and take it to the end.
Make a left onto Industrial Road. The studio is about a half a mile down on the left (#75).
LTV Studio is the building on your left as you pull into the driveway.
I simply cannot emphasize strongly enough, how critically important it is for the noise affected to attend this meeting. Opposition groups will be there in force. And, so must we.

The Town Board needs to feel our support on Thursday evening.

This is OUR LAST CHANCE for vastly improved noise conditions this summer.

Please come. Please speak out. Please support these amendments as proposed. This is our last stand.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

See you then.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Cunningham
Chair

I realize the cold snowy weather seems to have settled in permanently on Long Island but spring is just round the corner. Here are a couple of vids I shot of the climbing roses at the Baiting Hollow Hummingbird sanctuary last year in early june. They scramble up the little wild cherry trees close to the bluff.

Queen Emma Lily

This wonderfully fragrant flower, Crinum augustum, was a favorite of the last queen of Hawaii, just prior to US annexation. At the end of this clip I zoom out to show its location, under a vast seagrape tree from which hangs a rocking chair, just outside the back door of our house, "Woodstar". You can also see a native buccaneer palm (Pseudophenix sargentii, with a bromeliad clinging to its trunk, and behind it the swordlike upright leaves of "mother in law's tongue" (Sansievieria)
